Originally designed by famed architect William Gibbons Preston in the Romanesque Revival Style, the Saunders Castle at Park Plaza is a designated National Historic Landmark. The structure was originally built as an Armory for the First Corps of Cadets of Massachusetts, who assisted in local and national peacekeeping efforts. The cornerstone was laid in 1891, and construction was completed in 1897, including a drawbridge, a moat, numerous turrets, and beautiful touches such as a carved, winged dragon.
Happenings at the Saunders Castle over the years have included Boston Ballet and Boston Lyric Opera performances, Downton Abbey: The Exhibition, major UNICEF events, numerous charity and benefit galas, and movie filming by major film studios – as well many other events of local, national and international significance.
